RESEARCH #10- Watchmen- 2009 by Zack Snyder

Updated: Sep 22, 2020

- There are 29 titles in this sequence

- The main images are that of the superheroes and how the world is changing around them as decades progress. It begins in the 1940s and ends in the late 1970s. We see heroes die or retire and we see new ones be introduced and take up their positions. This film deals with how heroes change and in some cases leave and how the past will come back to haunt them. We also see world events change, like how Nixon is re-elected for a third term. This tells us that this world is different from ours, like a parallel universe.

- The superheroes show us that this is a superhero film. The music tells us that this is set in the past. The problems that the superheroes face outside of their heroic lives show us that this film looks at superheroes in a different light.

- The different characters show us that these characters are new and original, introducing us to them. The diverse make-up of the Watchmen gives us little in terms of who the film is targeted for, only for those who like superhero films.

- The use of slow-motion almost gives the sequence a diorama effect, as if you are seeing snapshots of life through the decades. The music also gives a sombre tone to the montage, as if superheroes are past their hey day.
